NYP History
The NYP was established in 1993. Some local parents were looking for a place to run a club for their young children. The barn attached to the local Mountview clinic was empty for a long time. This was originally the family home of the Smyths. When the last of the family died without heir the land was bequeathed to the community.
The local parents made a deal with the health board that they would clean up and renovate the building in exchange for the chance to run youth groups on the premises. This was the start of the Neighbourhood Youth Project.
After some time the parents realised the extent of personal difficulties and issues the children were experiencing. So once again they got together and applied for a manager to run the centre. The new manager came in and assessed the situation and accessed funding to turn an old cow shed into a two story specialised service for families in the Mountview and Blakestown area.
Since then the project grew and employed staff under the area's of youth work, education, life skills, community development and family support. The NYP now engages with nearly 200 families a year.
